Area rug: A Brief Overview

One of the quickest ways to transform a mood or character of a room is to add an area rug. With the use of a suitable pad, area rugs can be placed on top of any kind of flooring, usually with remarkable results.

Area rugs can be either low-priced or incredibly expensive, the price depends on which materials are used, how they were made and the degree of artistic quality or complexity in their design. Handmade wool, 100% silk or wool and silk Oriental or Persian rugs have been known to last hundreds of years and just seem to increase in value.

With the improvement of rug making machines, nowadays "machine made" rugs can be made with complicated design patterns on computerized looms that can imitate the more elaborate and labor-intensive handmade rugs at significantly reduced costs. The majority of people can now afford to purchase beautiful area rugs because of the rug making machines. Area rugs are made out of natural or man made fibers, the natural fibers of wool and silk, (or a blend of wool/silk) are usually used in Oriental and Persian rugs, while the man made fibers such as olefin (polypropylene), or nylon make affordable, stain resistant rugs and in some applications, particularly bath mats, cotton is the fiber of choice. Wool and silk rugs dominate the high end of the market. Heat set olefin looks much like wool, offers excellent clean ability, especially with stain resistant treatments, and at a moderate price in comparison to wool.
