Your Area Rug resource online
There is no record of when the first rugs were made, regrettably not much is know about the first attempts at rug weaving, as the majority of them are lost forever. A Soviet archaeologist in 1949 discovered the earliest surviving knotted rug, which is called the Pazyryk carpet, it was found frozen under Siberian ice in the Altai Mountains near the outer Mongolian border and had been buried for over 2500 years, it is now displayed in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Unfortunately, the origins of the Pazyryk carpet are unknown. It is woven
using the Turkish knot and measures approximately 6' x 5'. The original design
has a tile-work central motif surrounded by borders with rows of elk and
horsemen and is thought to be a ceremonial procession, perhaps depicting a
Scything burial ceremony.
